Island Sunset in Watercolour

I followed the first half of the EASY WATERCOLOR PAINTING IDEAS FOR BEGINNERS! Watercolor Silhouette Paintings video tutorial by Kirsty Partridge Art for this piece. I made a few changes to the silhouette, not just in aesthetics but also by using an ink pen instead of black watercolour to complete it.

Island Sunset

I don’t have a purple watercolour at the moment so I mixed red and blue to get the desired colour. The watercolour background was all wet on wet, and I think I used a little too much water which caused some blotches. In saying that, the blotches make the sky look like it has clouds, so it could be a useful technique if that is what I’m going for!
The colours I used were:
  • Lemon Yellow
  • Vermillion
  • Crimson Red
  • Ultramarine (mixed with Crimson Red to get the purple)
  • Black
The thin leaves of the palm trees create a sense of detail that silhouette art usually lacks, so I’m very happy with this!
