I was in a bookshop recently and I stumbled across a series of Paint It! art tutorial books. They come with tracing paper and a full set of instructions on how to paint a particular scene.
I purchased the three watercolour ones they had in stock and tried out North Carolina Barn in Watercolour, by Terry Harrison.
The book claims the tracing paper “couldn’t be easier to use”. I wouldn’t go that far – it took a long time and a lot of effort to get it to transfer! Once it was transferred though, the rest of the painting was a breeze thanks to the detailed step by step instructions.
It detailed which colours I’d need (I didn’t have a couple but I just substituted) and some of the instructions also tell you which brush is best to use.
I don’t have a fan brush but I made my own version of another by trimming it. I loved that technique to get the green grass at the front of the painting. It worked so well! I brightened up the sky more than the original because I wanted it to be a little more cheery.
Overall, I’m happy with how it turned out, and am looking forward to trying another one of these books!
